happy new year

Gorodets, Nizhny Novgorod Region, January 2009
Gorodets is a small provincial Russian town where life is quiet and slow. It sits on the bank of the Volga River in Nizhni Novgorod Region. Winter landscapes and low-key scenery surrounding Gorodets fit well with the locals' short-spoken and hard-working character. Still, their natural quietness does not mean they do not like to celebrate. Russia's most enjoyable holiday - the New Year - is celebrated here in a big way. Cheerful and drunk men and women stroll and party around town the whole New Year night. A couple of days after the main New Year celebrations are over and people come back to their senses, the houses of culture host parties for children with Ded Moroz (Santas) and gifts.
I was interested in looking at these festivities through the eyes of ordinary Russians and make photographs as in family albums which I love no less than good professional photography.
